Two weeks before the physical disk is in stores, the digital version of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker has officially launched. The Wii U bundle with the digital version of the game and the Hyrule Historia is also available today. I think having the game release digitally two entire weeks before its official launch is genius. I don’t think there’s any better way to convince a consumer to buy the digital release at full price, than to give them the game much early. Some publishers have released their digital games a day or a weekend early, but Nintendo is attempting to try a better approach. I reserved myself a copy of the Special Edition Wind Waker so I have to wait two more weeks, but I’m hurting to play the game now. If I wasn’t a hoarder for cases and toys, I’d download the digital copy. I think this is a smart choice and every publisher should consider this approach instead of having online passes only inside a brand new case. Maybe releasing digital games weeks before its physical version is the future. Maybe this can be the solution to the flood of used games on sale.
